Greenodd is a small village in the Crake Valley Area of the South Lakes just over 3 miles north east of Ulverston. The population of the Crake Valley is just under 2000.
The village is unusual in that it still has 3 shops; a butcher, a baker and a Post Office/village store. It also has The Ship Inn and another public house, in the adjoining village of Penny Bridge. The Post Office/village store, run by Lloyd & Janet Willis, delivers over 150 newspapers daily within a 5 mile radius.
On the 18 March it was announced that Greenodd Post Office Counter had been earmarked for closure by Post Office Ltd. Lloyd & Janet called a public meeting at Greenodd Village Hall on Wednesday 26 March to gauge the level of support, from the community, to launch a campaign to try to keep Greenodd Post Office open.
The public meeting was attended by 340 local residents and it is estimated that at least another 30-40 could not get in to the village hall or into the village to park.
The community is not happy with Post Office Ltd’s proposal to close Greenodd Post Office counter (which is open 30 hours per week) and replace it with a mobile outreach service of 11 hours, yet to be determined. Leven Valley Post Office (just over 3 miles east of Greenodd) is also to be closed and replaced by a 9 hour outreach service, leaving the nearest Post Office in Ulverston.
The decision to close both of these offices seems illogical, particularly in light of the decision to leave 6 post offices open in the Grange area and to leave Grizebeck Post Office open, which only has 4 regular customers and Little Langdale Post Office which has no customers at all.
The closure of the Post Office counter will result in 3 part-time staff being made redundant and probably in the closure of the village store. This will undoubtedly have a knock on effect on the baker & the butcher and ultimately be the end of the village & community, as we know it.
The community now has the CONSULTATION PERIOD, which lasts until 27 May to campaign and to put a case together to change the decision of Post Office Ltd.
Thats just 9 Days 21 Hours 34 Minutes 41 Seconds left!
